Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb (your choice)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Step by Step:

1. Prepare the Filling:

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef or lamb over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onions, diced carrots, and minced garlic. Cook until vegetables are tender.
  • Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well.
  • Pour in broth, add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and frozen peas.
  • Season with salt and pepper. Simmer until the mixture thickens.
  • Optional: Add fresh thyme or rosemary for extra flavor.

2. Make the Mashed Potatoes:

  • Boil peeled and diced potatoes until tender. Drain.
  • Mash potatoes with milk, butter, salt, and pepper until smooth.

3. Assemble and Bake:

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish.
  • Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the filling.
  • Use a fork to create decorative patterns on the potato surface.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
