Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: Additional orange zest or powdered sugar for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cardamom, and orange zest.
  3. Add the cold butter cubes to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it’s okay if there are a few lumps.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  7. Using a sharp knife or a round cutter, cut the dough into wedges or rounds, depending on your preference.
  8. Place the shaped scones on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
  10. Allow the scones to cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Optional: Garnish with additional orange zest or a dusting of powdered sugar before serving.
