Herbed Artisan French Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F or 45°C)
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, or oregano)
Instructions:
Preparing the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Stir in the olive oil and chopped herbs.
- Gradually add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Forming the Loaves:
- Divide the dough into two equal portions.
- Shape each portion into a loaf by gently stretching and folding the dough over itself, forming a tight ball.
- Place the loaves on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cover the loaves loosely with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Baking:
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Once the loaves have risen, gently slash the tops with a sharp knife or razor blade.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove the loaves from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
