Ingredients
For the Fries:
- 1 bag frozen French fries, or 2 large russet potatoes, cut into fries
- Salt to taste
For the Animal Style Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
- 1 tsp white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp sugar
For the Toppings:
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp butter
- 4 slices American cheese
Directions
- Prepare the Fries:
- Cook the fries according to package directions (oven-baked or fried) until golden and crispy. If using fresh potatoes, soak them in water for 30 minutes, drain, and pat dry before frying or baking. Season with salt.
- Make the Animal Style Sauce:
- In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, and sugar. Stir until well blended and smooth. Set aside.
- Caramelize the Onions:
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.
- Assemble the Animal Style Fries:
- Place the cooked fries on an oven-safe dish or baking sheet. Lay the slices of American cheese over the fries and place under a broiler or in a hot oven for 1-2 minutes, just until the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the oven and top with the caramelized onions and a generous drizzle of the Animal Style sauce.
- Serve:
- Serve hot with extra sauce on the side for dipping!
