Why This Recipe Works

These Copycat Animal Style Fries bring the iconic In-N-Out flavor home! Crispy French fries topped with melty American cheese, caramelized onions, and a tangy, savory sauce make for an indulgent treat that’s hard to resist. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side for burger night!

Ingredients

For the Fries:

  • 1 bag frozen French fries, or 2 large russet potatoes, cut into fries
  • Salt to taste

For the Animal Style Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp sugar

For the Toppings:

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 4 slices American cheese

Directions

  1. Prepare the Fries:
    • Cook the fries according to package directions (oven-baked or fried) until golden and crispy. If using fresh potatoes, soak them in water for 30 minutes, drain, and pat dry before frying or baking. Season with salt.
  2. Make the Animal Style Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, and sugar. Stir until well blended and smooth. Set aside.
  3. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.
  4. Assemble the Animal Style Fries:
    • Place the cooked fries on an oven-safe dish or baking sheet. Lay the slices of American cheese over the fries and place under a broiler or in a hot oven for 1-2 minutes, just until the cheese is melted.
    • Remove from the oven and top with the caramelized onions and a generous drizzle of the Animal Style sauce.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve hot with extra sauce on the side for dipping!
