Here’s a simple, hearty, and budget-friendly dish straight from comfort food heaven: Amish Country Poor Man’s Hamburger Steaks 🍽️🍔 A nostalgic favorite made with basic pantry staples that delivers big flavor on a dime!

📝 Ingredients

  • 1½ lbs ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed saltines)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter (for searing)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

🔥 Directions

1. Make patties:

In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined. Form into 4–6 patties.

2. Sear the patties:

Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be cooked through yet).

3. Make the gravy:

In the same skillet, melt 1 tbsp butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth. Add onion powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened.

4. Simmer everything together:

Return the patties to the skillet. Spoon some gravy over them. Cover and let simmer on low heat for 20–25 minutes until fully cooked through.

  • Add mushrooms or onions to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • You can substitute beef broth with onion soup for a deeper flavor twist.
  • This is perfect served over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or white rice.
