Here’s a savory, cheesy, and ultra-comforting French Onion Chicken Bake — a one-dish dinner that brings all the rich flavor of French onion soup into a hearty chicken meal.


🧅 French Onion Chicken Bake

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 40–45 minutes
Total Time: ~55 minutes

📝 Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar (optional, for extra depth)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup (or use homemade if preferred)
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh thyme or parsley (optional garnish)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Caramelize the onions:
    • Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
    • Cook for about 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown.
    • Add balsamic vinegar in the last minute (optional).
  3. Prepare the chicken:
    • Season chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
    • Sear chicken in a hot skillet (just 2–3 minutes per side) until lightly browned. You don’t need to cook it through.
  4. Assemble and bake:
    • Place chicken in a greased baking dish.
    • Spoon caramelized onions over the chicken.
    • Pour French onion soup evenly over the top.
    • Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
  5. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Garnish with thyme or parsley if desired. Serve hot!
