🍝 The Best Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage (optional for meat sauce)
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional for a kick)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or basil for garnish
Directions:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add diced onions and sauté until soft (about 5 minutes).
- Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- If using ground beef or sausage, add it now and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well.
- Add in sugar, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
- Bring sauce to a gentle simmer, then lower heat and simmer uncovered for at least 30 minutes (the longer, the better!).
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve over your favorite pasta and top with fresh herbs and Parmesan if desired.
